The Diabolic Review

The Diabolic (The Diabolic #1)
Nemesis is a Diabolic. Created to protect a galactic Senator's daughter, Sidonia. There's no one Nemesis wouldn't kill to keep her safe. But when the power-mad Emperor summons Sidonia to the galactic court as a hostage, there is only one way for Nemesis to protect Sidonia.
She must become her.
Now one of the galaxy's most dangerous weapons is masquerading in a world of corruption and Nemesis has to hide her true abilities or risk everything. As the Empire begins to fracture and rebellion looms closer, Nemesis learns that there is something stronger than her deadly force: the one thing she's been told she doesn't have - humanity. And, amidst all the danger, action and intrigue, her humanity might be the only thing that can save her, Sidonia and the entire Empire...

Tiger Oma’s Thoughts
Never judge a book by its cover is what all teachers and librarians say.  Well, I picked this book to read because I was intrigued by the cover:  a butterfly with razor sharp knives for wings.

I must say the book did not disappoint.  I was hooked from the very first sentence, “Everyone believed Diabolics were fearless, but in my earliest years, all I knew was fear.”   This book is packed with fear, dealing with fears, and finally rising above fears.  I think S.J. Kincaid did a wonderful job in allowing the reader to enter the mind of Nemesis.   According to Merriam-Webster, Nemesis is the Greek goddess of retributive justice.  The name fits the Diabolic perfectly.  Nemesis is a very dynamic main character.  In fact, the cover is perfect for the book.  A morphing butterfly; I love the symbolism. She is in constant change both physically and mentally. She represents the evil and goodness in all of us.  The only problem is, Nemesis is a bioengineered being that is “made” not to feel.  I love the journey Nemesis goes on to discover that she is more than just a killing machine.  As a creature with feelings, Nemesis must decide how to deal with those feeling.  The biggest feeling she must face is trust.  In a world where everyone is out for themselves, whom do you trust?  Does Nemesis trust Sidonia or Tyrus?  Can she trust her own feelings?

This book is about sacrifices.  Should one be sacrificed for the greater good of all?  Nemesis must find the answer to this question.  It motivates all her other choices.

I really thought the idea of this book was very original. I was fascinated with the concept that all the lower class people live on planets and the royalty and government live in manmade worlds in space. S.J. Kincaid does an excellent job of drawing you into the story through her characters and descriptions. I personally can’t wait until Diabolic Book #2 is released November 7, 2017.  This new addition to the series is still untitled.  I can’t wait for the title release.

I do think that Diabolic is a good book club book.  It lends itself to several discussions and activities.
  1. Sacrificing for the greater good
  2. Trust
  3. Futuristic societies
  4. Bioengineered beings
  5. Predictions for book #2
  6. Change in characters throughout a book
  7. Rewriting parts from Tyrus or other character’s point of view
