Rebel Mechanics

REBEL MECHANICS
By Shanna Swendson

I checked out REBEL MECHANICS from our middle school media center and read it as part of our after school book club, spring of 2017.
Rebel Mechanics description from Goodreads

I was drawn to REBEL MECHANICS because of the cover. I was attracted to the subtle gray tones and flash of color from the red ribbon around the notched washer. “ALL IS FAIR IN LOVE AND REVOLUTION” sealed the deal. You can’t go wrong with spies, revolution, secrets, alternate history and Steampunk.
I was hooked on REBEL MECHANICS only a few chapters in.  I like the mysteries and the way Swendson gave you just enough information to keep you wanting more. I loved all the secret passages, secret messages, secret friendships, secret alliances, and secret missions. It seemed to have an air of danger mixed in with the action.
Middle school readers will love the romance. It is a combination of sexual tension, discovering, flirting, teasing, wondering, betrayal and love. I love how books written for these grade levels do not overwhelm the reader with the “gory” sex descriptions and details. Middle school readers are happy with the innocent romance. One of my favorite parts is when the reader is left hanging and doesn’t know how things turn out romantically. You have to read the second book to find out.
I liked the wide spectrum of the characters: Verity, a very innocent and protected girl set loose in the big city to make her own way;  Nat, Colin, Lizzy, Alec and the other streetwise Steampunkers who are everywhere in the city courtesy of tunnels, teamwork and steam power. They are not afraid to take risks for what they believe is right; Lord Henry, the absent minded uncle with a hint of mystery; and the Magistrates, the powerful British government’s representation in the colonies. I am always amazed when a writer can merge all different kinds of personalities, lifestyles, and political beliefs into a captivating cast of characters. Swendson does a wonderful job of this.
REBEL MECHANICS is a book that will appeal to male and female middle schoolers. It is an action packed mystery with a touch of Steampunk and romance. I know from experience with my book club, that it is a very high-in-demand read and will spend little time on the shelves. My book club loved to discuss this book.

A personal note: I am a sucker for books that combine historical fiction and science fiction. I’m a huge fan of Steampunk. In fact, after reading this book, I started watching several television shows about Steampunk and Steampunk fashion.  Sad to say, I do not think I can pull off a Steampunk look.
